Wine of the Wine - Recommended by NicoDate published: 05/09/15

This week's wine of the week: Clos Fountaine 2008

After sharing a bottle with his father Nico is fully endorsing this wine; fruity and well rounded, with red berries on the nose followed by lovely juicy plums on the palate.

Château Clos Fontaine 2008 Côtes de Francs

Grape: Merlot
Origin: Côtes de Francs is Bordeaux's smallest appellation, just 450 hectares of vineyards in all, located in the picturesque hills to the east of St-Emilion. Clos Fontaine is perhaps the area's best known winery, owned by the illustrious Thienpont family.
Taste: A medium-bodied and rounded wine. Aged in single-use oak barrels for up to 14 months and matured for a further 2 years before bottling, it is harmonious, smooth and has a gently spicy muscularity.
Enjoy: Decant before serving. Best with hearty beef casseroles.

A Summer Recipe & Wine MatchDate published: 21/08/15

Wowsers it's nearly the end of August... How did that happen?! So before the sun runs away why not 'Chuck a Shrimp in the Barbie'! with this tasty recipe and stunning wine to match.

Prawn, garlic and tarragon kebabs, with a yoghurt and sesame dip.

30 Raw Tiger Prawns
2 Cloves of Garlic, crushed
2 tbl spoon Tarragon leaves, chopped
2 tbl spoon olive oil
250g greek yoghurt
1 tbl sesame oil
2 tsp sesame seeds
Juice of 1 lemon


1. Build the prawn kebabs. Sprinkle with the garlic, tarragon and olive oil. Place in the freezer for 30 minutes.
2. Whilst waiting prepare your sauce. Stir the sesame oil, seeds and lemon juice in to the yoghurt.
3. Cook the kebabs on the BBQ or grill for 3 minutes each side.
4. Dip in the Sesame Sauce and enjoy!!

Wine Recommendation:

This dish is full of zesty citrus flavours and lively garlic, this will match perfectly with our Paul Mas Vermentino. Vementino is a traditional southern French/Italian grape variety, often found in Sadinia and Corsica, this example is from the Paul Mas estates in the Languedoc, South of France. This wine has a back bone of racy lemon and lime citrus, with notes of minerality and marine characteristics. It is refreshingly dry with tangy acidity that pairs wonderfully with all the aspects of this dish.

Food and Wine Matching .... TartifletteDate published: 15/08/15

Tartiflette is a French dish from the Savoie and Haute Savoie region of France. If you're a ski bum like me waiting till January for your next helping is just too long! So get your skiier/border friends round for an evening of reminiscing the 14/15 season and planning your 15/16 holiday! 

Here's my recipe and top wines to match!


750g (1½lb) Waxy Potatoes (I don't bother to peal them!)
1 Onion, peeled and sliced very thinly
1 Clove of garlic, sliced
1tbsp Olive Oil
150g Smoked Lardons
150ml White Wine
4tbsp Reduced Fat Crème Fraîche
1 Reblochon Cheese, sliced length ways. (Don't cut off the rind - It's the best bit!!)
Freshly Ground Black Pepper

Pre Heat Oven to 180°C

1) Par boil the potatoes until tender but still firm (about 10mins). Drain and leave to cool, then slice (about 5mm wide).
2) Fry the bacon bits in a little olive oil until they start to brown, then add the onions, and chopped garlic. Continue to cook until the onions are soft. Remove from pan and set aside.
3) Using the same pan, place over a low heat. Add the wine, crème fraiche and ground pepper. Whilst stirring bring to simmering point, then remove from the heat. (This helps all the yummy bacon flavous get into the sauce!)
4) Layer half the cooked potatoes into a large gratin dish sprinkling the bacon mix. Spread half the sliced Reblochon over the potatoes and bacon mix. Then pour over half of the crème fraiche sauce.
5) Repeat with the remaining potatoes, bacon mix, Reblochon and crème fraiche sauce. (I do it this way to get a good even amount of cheese throughout the dish!)
6) Bake for half an hour, until the potatoes are cooked and it’s all lovely and golden. (Sometimes I grill the top to make it extra crispy!)

Best served with a fresh green salad and some cornichons. 

Oh and some wine.....

My top Tartiflette wine is the Côtes du Rhône Belleruche 2014 M.Chapoutier. This red is full of ripe red berry fruits and spicy blackberry notes that work wonderfully with this rich and creaminess of this dish. The soft and round palate and smooth tannins compliments and does not overpower the Tartiflette.
Since it is the middle of Summer, you may prefer a white wine, my recommendation would be the 
Alsatian Kuhlmann-Platz Pinot Gris 2013 Cave de Hunawihr. This a rich white makes a great partner for tartiflette, especially if the same wine is added to the dish! This off dry wine, has refreshing notes of poached pears that work wonderfully with the smokiness of the lardons and apricot nuances to match the nuttiness of the Reblochon.

Hello, everybody! Christmas may seem a way off, but given that we're all going to forget to get a present for SOMEONE and end up rushing around on Christmas Eve, wouldn't it be better to get prepared for things you know you need to do?

I'm not normally one for early Christmas thoughts - this has a large part to do with my birthday being in mid-December - but I have just successfully organised all family visits over the Christmas period AND got my dad to the butcher to place the order for the goose. Turkey passeth not the threshold of my father's domain.

I've had the pleasure of five dinners in Dunkerque. To be honest, I've been pretty unlucky, since two of the restaurants were shut when I got there. They were, of course, the one's that were furthest away on the windiest of days, but hey ho. You can't win them all.

Having said that, you cannot possibly lose if you go to Atelier de Steff! The food is fresh and high quality, beautifully prepared by a chef with natural flair. I would also like to seriously vouch for the staff - what wonderful people. And I don't just say that because we were sitting at the table next to the stairs when a glass went flying from above, missing my head by inches, resulting in profuse apologies and free Champagne. Though, I must say, that did help!

Dunkerque - why you should visit! (between 24 & 27 October)Date published: 05/10/14

I'm normally wittering on at length about wine on here, so for a change, I thought I would let you know the kind of things I've been up to since getting here, and let you in on a few of the reasons I think you should go where I've gone!

One of these places is Dunkerque... Doesn't sound terribly romantic, am I right? The town conjures up images of WWII bombings, industrialism and ports. But I tell you it is more than that!

Particularly between the 24th and 27th October! If you're reading this, you probably like wine, or if not, beer. So, get yourself to the Salon du Vin, de la Biere et des Produits Regionaux! There will be lots of stalls with lots of producers from all over France - Alsace, Provence and so forth - so this is really worth the visit.

A Moment for MalbecDate published: 22/08/14

Malbec is an undeniable favourite of the moment, offering great value and great flavour. Here are some of my top reasons it should be in your shopping trolley:

1) Argentinian Altitude - You may not realise this, but Malbec tends to have far fewer pesticides used on its vines in Argentina. Why? Because the height of the plantings simply doesn't support many of the nasty bugs and beasties that afflict winegrowers in other parts of the world.

2) Argentinian Acidity - One of the main reasons Malbec took off was as a result of the increase in acidity that could be achieved up in the Argentinian mountains. No longer a minor player in Bordeaux, Argentina gave Malbec the chance to be a star!

3) Forget-me-not France - But don't let the success of Argentina blind you to Malbec grown closer to home. Just be ready for a different style! Southern France is now producing some excellent varietal Malbecs, but bare in mind the earthier, more rustic appeal and a tendency towards tannins early on in life! Think black cherries rather than blackberries!

4) Steak - No alliteration required here. Malbec and steak were made for each other. Just do it.

5) Robust with Resveratol - Probably. Another thing that the Argentinian altitude donates to the Malbec grapes is higher levels of resveratrol which *might* - that is *might* - help bring down your blood pressure and cholesterol levels, possibly ward off cancer, or generally make your body a happier place to be. Possibly. Well, no harm in trying, I suppose!

Alamos, Alamos, AlamosDate published: 21/08/14

You're probable pretty familiar with our Alamos range by now - Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Viognier and, of course, the staple Malbec. Well, good news! For fans of this superb range from the legendary Dr Catena, we now have in stock the Alamos Rosé!

First of all, let me tell you a bit about Dr Catena himself, or Malbec Man, as I like to think of him. After studying at Berkeley, California, he brought back European winemaking and vinegrowing ideas to Argentina. He developed a number of clones of Malbec and planted them at different altitudes, in different climates across Argentina. The best clone could therefore be selected for each area, giving the Catena winery some of the best Malbecs at a competitive price.

Now this extends to the Alamos Rosé. Here we have a rosé with good body and fruit, but with more interesting, developed quince notes than anything comparably priced, and aromatic notes that dance around the palate.

Why is a Pin like a Fountain?Date published: 20/08/14

One of our latest arrivals is an unassuming figure, a little Bordeaux by the name of Chateau Clos Fontaine. It comes from the Côtes de Francs, the smallest of the Bordeaux appellations, which lies to the east of St Emilion, and is made up of only 450 hectares. In fairly typical right bank fashion, it is 100% Merlot from old vines. This is a wine that is allowed to tell its own story, without any rough man-handling by the producer - the oak is not excessive, just enough to lend the wine structure and dynamism.

And who is the man behind the Merlot? None other than Dominique Thienpont, of the same family as Jacques Thienpont, the current manager of the prestigious Pomerol estate of Le Pin, famous for being the most expensive wine in the world, with a production of only 600-700 cases a year.

Chateau Clos Fontaine comes in at the rather more affordable price of £4.99/bottle.

I first encountered Gavi in a bar in Oxford in about 2007. Given I had no idea what it was and it was available by the glass, I thought it would be worth a go - and I was not wrong. This was a wine of delicate peachy flavours and restrained acidity, all the while keeping hold of its light, crisp character.

This is the very reason that the seafood restaurants of Genoa hold Gavi in such high esteem. No searingly sharp Sauvignon, this! The perfect match for the fresh catch of the day, or a refreshing treat on its own.

Picpoul - A Grape for All SeasonsDate published: 06/05/14

Picpoul has enjoyed quite some popularity in Majestic in recent years. It really is France's answer to Sauvignon Blanc. Picpoul (or Piquepoul) means 'lip-stinger', a reference to its lively acidity. While this is ideal for the modern palate, don't let me mislead you! Picpoul is truly ancient, one of the oldest grapes in the Languedoc region. Along with Clairette Blanche, it was used to make Picardan, a tremendously popular wine of the 17th and 18th centuries. These days, the two grapes are still companions, in the production of Noilly Prat Vermouth.

Picpoul is quite susceptible to fungal diseases, causing it to fall out of favour with many wine producers, and it is now produced in smaller quantities than it once was. Having said that, it is the only grape permitted in Picpoul de Pinet AC, a rare example of a cru taking the name of the grape in its title. In this capacity, the quality levels are reliably high, and it is drawing more and more interest.

This green-gold, young lemon wine has a lot to offer and is a fantastic accompaniment to fresh white fish. You must try it.

From Italy to OcDate published: 05/05/14

The Pays d'Oc is France's frontier of originality, the place where rules are loose and boundaries pushed. Grapes are planted that would make the Bordelais sniff and the Burgundians scream. And you know what? Good. What would life be without ruffling a few feathers?

Down in the Pays d'Oc, where Grenache Blanc grows, another white grape is developing a reputation: Vermentino.

Stephen Spurrier (MW) has called it the grape of the future. It has a fresh but lively citrus character, regularly joined by a racy mineral element, sometimes with a marine salinity that if present, provides finishing touches with panache.

This is the wine to be having as your aperitif. Expect to see more of it in years to come, so get ahead of the curve!

Here's a short test for you - which have you heard of?

Pinot Noir - (yes)

Pinot Grigio - (certainly)

Pinot Gris - (probably)

Pinot Blanc - (?! C'est quoi ça?)

If you find that Sauvignon Blancs give you heartburn, but aren't a Chardonnay fan, and find Pinot Grigio a little lacking, then it is time to give Pinot Blanc a try! Let me explain...

First, some background. Pinot Blanc was recently discovered to be a cross between Pinot Noir and the significantly less well-known Gouais Blanc. It is a permissible grape in parts of Burgundy, but its spiritual home is the Germanic world: Germany, Alsace and Austria, where it is made into relatively dense wines with a mineral streak and a mouth-filling white fruit texture.

Outside of those territories, in southern, warmer climes, it takes on a slightly different character. Lighter in body, with more citrus complementing the stone fruits (though without burning acidity) and while it is still present, a less pronounced gravel and limestone note. It is a wine for spring bank holidays and summer evenings, to share a glass with friends in the garden.

The Grapes of PiedTanqué (Part Five - The Finale)Date published: 25/04/14

You may have seen a couple of unfamiliar grape names cropping up in the article about our new PiedTanqué wines. Worry not! We are here to help! Keep reading for a brief introduction to these lesser-known varietals...

In this article, we will be looking at: Carignan.

This grape figures in both the PiedTanqué Rouge and Rosé wines. Like it's partner grape, Cinsault (see yesterday's article!), Carignan is great at withstanding hotter climes. It is, however, a more brash character than Cinsault - opposites attract - and focuses its efforts on deep, dark, intense crimson colour and a flavour to match. The wildness of Carignan is ample. Brambles and blackcurrants, leading with age to gaminess and grilled meat. Along with Garnatxa, it is one of the principle grapes of the presitigious Priorat region.

This might just be my favourite red grape in the universe.

The Grapes of PiedTanqué (Part Four)Date published: 24/04/14

You may have seen a couple of unfamiliar grape names cropping up in the article about our new PiedTanqué wines. Worry not! We are here to help! Keep reading for a brief introduction to these lesser-known varietals...

In this article, we will be looking at: Cinsault.

This grape figures in both the PiedTanqué Rouge and Rosé wines. Cinsault is a heat-resistant grape, which makes it ideal for the warm conditions of the South of France. It also made it useful in South Africa, where it was called "Hermitage" and crossed with Pinot Noir to make the famous signature grape of South Africa, Pinotage! Cinsault is a luxuriously smooth, sophisticated grape, often blended with Carignan (which we will look at tomorrow!) or Grenache, lending a velvety elegance to the blend.

In rosé wines, Cinsault brings a soft strawberry, red cherry aroma, and if you close your eyes and inhale, it is as if you were standing in strawberry fields. In red wines, there is greater intensity of your red cherries and some slightly darker fruits - but nothing too wild! You hardly notice the tannins as the wine glides over and around your palate with its supreme softness.

The last in our PiedTanqué series comes out tomorrow - Cinsault's partner grape, Carignan!

You may have seen a couple of unfamiliar grape names cropping up in the article about our new PiedTanqué wines. Worry not! We are here to help! Keep reading for a brief introduction to these lesser-known varietals...

In this article, we will be looking at: Terret.

Terret is actually the name for the parent grape, that, like Pinot, spawned a Noir, a Gris and a Blanc version. The grape from the PiedTanqué wines is, of course, Terret Blanc, and that is what we will investigate here today! Prone to mutation, the colour of the berries varies from vintage to vintage. Some viticulturturists have reported seeing red, grey and white berries on the same plant! Terret Blanc buds later than most vines, meaning that it often avoids the spring frosts that affect other varieties. The grapes retain a high level of acidity and freshness, because of which they are used in blends across the Languedoc-Rousillon. This grape has also been used for Vermouth, when Clairette and Picpoul grapes were not available.

In this article, we will be looking at: Grenache Blanc.

Perhaps you are familiar with Grenache, the red grape grown across the Rhône and the South of France, known as Garnacha in Spain and Garnatxa in Catalonia. This is a related grape, but, unsurprisingly, a white variety! Grenache Blanc does not have much acidity, but what it lacks in sharpness, it makes up for with body, flavour and alcohol. This makes it the perfect grape to blend with the Ugni Blanc of our last article. It delivers citrus and fresh green herbal notes. Just as Viognier is permitted in some red wines of the Rhône, like Côte-Rôtie, up to 10% Grenache Blanc is permitted in the red wines of the Côtes-du-Rhône appellation!

In this article, we will be looking at: Ugni Blanc.

Ugni Blanc is perhaps better known by its original Italian name, Trebbiano. It is, in fact, the second most widely planted grape in the world! It is fresh and fruity, and generally designed to be drunk young. Similar to Sauvignon Blanc, Ugni Blanc is high in acidity. This means it is the perfect grape for brandy production, and is used to make both Cognac and Armagnac.

PiedTanqué Rouge - This easy-drinking red comes from the Hérault Valley. Light-bodied and possessing a supple tannic structure, this is an eminently drinkable red, delivering ripe blackcurrant and raspberry flavours with subtle herbaceous notes, leading to a clean finish.

PiedTanqué Blanc - This wine is made from a blend of three traditional grape varieties: Ugni Blanc, Grenache Blanc and Terret. An easy-going, lightweight white wine with moderate alcohol and a pleasing mixture of citrus and white fruit character, and soft-edged acidity.

PiedTanqué Rosé - This rosé is made from Cinsault and Carignan grapes sourced from the Hérault region of the Languedoc. It is similar in style to many of the light and delicate rosés from the more famous, premium regions across the south of France and as such, represents amazing value. A pale and delicate rosé, offering a straightforward nose of ripe red berry aromas and a light, gently off-dry palate that is rounded and soft in texture.

Codorniu have a history of winemaking going back to the 16th century, so they really know what they are doing. This is a fresh, dry cava, driven by crisp apple fruit and a slight blanched almond character. What a winner!

From the Eurotunnel:

On exiting the terminal take the A16 (signposted Boulogne). Take the first exit you come to which is junction 41, signposted Coquelles/Sangatte. Turn right on the roundabout off the slip road and then you will come almost immediately to another roundabout (you can't miss this as there is a big drill on the middle of the roundabout). Turn right again onto Avenue Charles de Gaulle and then drive for about 5 minutes. At this point you will see us on the left hand side after a small selection of hotels. To enter the store go all the way around the roundabout in front of you and take the entrance on your right. 

From the Ferry Terminal: On exiting the terminal take the A26 and drive for about 5 minutes until you reach the A16 motorway. Take the right hand slip road signposted Boulogne/Channel Tunnel and then on the motorway drive for about 10 minutes until you reach junction 41. Turn right on the roundabout off the slip road and then you will come almost immediately to another roundabout (you can't miss this as there is a big drill on the middle of the roundabout). Bonfire Night Wines

Having a bonfire come the 5th November? Some of our customers have been looking for wines to serve at their firework night parties and we've got plenty of recommendations.. and they'll also help you beat the chill when watching the fireworks!

Vinalba Malbec - £7.99* - Brimming with ripe dark plum fruit flavours, a perfect smoothness and balanced structure gives an incredibly long lingering finish that just rolls on and on.
Vina Eguia Gran Reserva - £6.99* - Ruby red with medium density and a brick-like rim. The fruit is very mature, exhibiting raisin, prune and caramel notes, accompanied by vanilla, clove and leather. Silky mouth-feel and good length.
Luis Felipe Edwards Seleccion Especial Merlot - £3.99* - A deep purplish red, this wine is youthful and vigourous, offering a red cherry and cassis backbone, and hints of fresh green herbs. Use of French oak has given added polish and softness.

Yalumba Y Series Viognier - £5.99* - Our best Viognier without a doubt. This is a full-bodied dry white, with a gorgeously perfumed floral scent and a ripe, peach and apricot fruit, with a silky palate-feel - it will remind you of those warm summers nights that, when standing in the freezing cold, seem like a dim and distant memory.
Vinalba Chardonnay - £7.99* - An inviting golden colour, this Chardonnay is ripe and soft, with yellow apple, tangerine and pineapple fruit. The palate is refreshing and mellow, with a round, lightly nutty finish. A perfect white winter warmer.
Grand Ardeche Louis Latour - £7.99* - 
Yellow-green in colour, with a subtle nose of vanilla. On the palate there are ripe apple and peach fruits with a nutty, buttery creamy texture. One of our staff favourites, this is also an excellent food wine. 

Canard Duchene Champagne - £14.99* -  Clean and fruity in style, with baked-bread and bruised-apple notes, fresh and easy drinking. 
Prosecco Conegliano - £6.99* - A pale straw colour with a fine mousse and typical fruit characters of apples and pineapples.
Codorniu Cava - £3.99 - This Cava has been produced with the expertise of Codorníu, whose wine producing story dates back to the 16th century. A dry light bodied Cava displaying green apple, citrus, almond and brioche characters.

As we now have our new Christmas prices released we are taking it in turns to put some of our favourite wines on the tasting counter. This first week is being managed by our 'star in the reasonably priced forklift', Franck and he has picked a few cracking deals which will certainly go down well this Christmas (If you don't drink them before that!). Ever the shrewd eye Franck has picked a selection of wines that are great to drink and don't break the bank.

Alamos Viognier, £6.99- From the warm Mendoza region of Argentina this unoaked Chardonnay gives a wonderful nose and palate filled with the stone fruits you expect from this grape variety. A light floral note gives this an elegant edge which is complemented with a refreshing natural acidity.

Paul Mas Vermentino, £3.99 (on multibuy)- A relatively new wine to our range but from one of our favourite producers it did not disappoint. A somewhat unknown grape variety this is a must try on the tasting counter. An array of citrus fruits as well as lightly smoky edge is balanced with a slightly oily texture. This has potential to be the perfect partner for any seafood dishes.

Vina Eguia Reserva, £4.49 (on multibuy)- A steadfast of the Majestic Rioja collection the Eguia range never disappoints. Brilliantly balanced you are greeted with a bouquet of dark fruits and plum as well as the slight toasting given by the additional ageing. A medium body but this will hold up well against steaks and hearty dishes.

William Hardy Signature Cabernet Sauvignon, £3.99 (on multibuy) – Another newbie! The history of the Hardy's vineyards goes back five generations and the consistently producers wines to a high standard. The nose offers plenty of dark fruits with a menthol and vanilla twist whilst the palate is filled with lushious cassis flavours.

This week, we've chosen the Peter Lehmann Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 from the Barossa Valley as our Wine of the Week

By sourcing grapes from a large number of growers throughout the Barossa region, Peter Lehmann are able to make a well rounded and consistent Cabernet, benefitting from multiple vineyard characteristics. The wine is harmonised by ageing in oak hogsheads for 12 months. This wine is a weighty, ripe Cabernet Sauvignon that is nonetheless easy-drinking and soft. Dense blackcurrant fruit, tinged with a leafy spiceness, all framed by fine-grained tannins.

Ready to drink now or over the next 3 years. Goes well with mature cheddar cheese.

Macon Lugny Louis Latour 2011

At Majestic we pride ourselves on having a good knowledge of our wines and the styles appreciated by our customers. Each week leading up to Christmas we will be offering you a taste and a bit of information regarding some of our favourite wines here in store. This way you can give them a try and pick our brains about it as well!

To get us started I have chosen a style of wine which is particularly popular with Majestic customers from a well known and respected producer, Louis Latour. One of the most recognisable French labels Latour's history stems to 1797 and remains family run to this day.

The popularity of this wine stems from is variability when pairing it with food. A great partner for fish, poultry and pork this wine truly represents the 'All-Rounder' and should be a certain feature of your wine-rack for those impromptu guests.

This Burgundian Chardonnay has a typically inviting pale golden colour generally associated with the Macon style. The nose offers great depth with plenty of fresh green apple, a variety of citrus fruit and slight toasted notes, courtesy of its 12 months in French Oak. Similarities are found on the palate with the toasted aromas developing in a mild buttery taste. A crisp acidity and the additional hints of stone fruit highlight how versatile and complex this inexpensive dry white wine can be.

Well seen as the weather has taken a massive turn and everyone's Prosecco reserves have run out we might as well move onto some new offers and some fantastic warming reds.

CVNE Crianza- At £3.99 this represents a true bargain. A brilliantly balanced crianza from one of our favourite producers. An excellent bouquet of summer fruits is met on the palate with hints of vanilla from its short period of oak ageing. This offer won't last for ever and is certainly a must have for Autumn and Christmas.

Georges DuBeouf Fleurie- On a special offer here in France at £6.99 this offers the perfect balance between a comforting red and the light flavours that will bring back memories from summer past. Plenty of light floral aromas (thanks to Carbonic Maceration) is met with light tannins but plenty of ripe red fruit flavours that we all know and love from the Gamay grape.

Santa Rita Medalla Carmenere- Looking for something with a little more weight to it? The Santa Rita 120 range is one of our most popular here in Coquelles, like that and you will love Medalla. From Santa Rita also this Grand Reserve Carmenere is a full bodied delight. Packed full of plum and cassis flavours following generous oaking which offers hints of chocolate this will pair marvellously with some hearty autumn dishes.

We are delighted this Autumn to be able to introduce some new wines to our range whilst slashing the price of some old favourites.

We have a great range of New Zealand wines from Matua who are offering a Sauvignon Blanc and a Pinot Noir retailing at £5.99 and £6.99 on multibuy.

So who are Matua? Well they may not be known to many in the UK they are a powerhouse in New Zealand and have been offering an excellent balance between quality and price since the 1970's. Established by brothers Bill and Ross Spence Matua have continued to grow in a number of New Zealands famous wine regions (Auckland and Marlborough) offering a range of grape varieties and styles.

The Sauvignon follows the line that we all know any love of fresh crisp citrus flavours with gooseberry and passion fruit. A crisp dry white with a genorous acidity this is a must have for those remaining summer evenings and will surely be featuring on our tasting counter in the coming weeks.

The Pinot Noir offers a medium body but is packed with fresh red fruit flavours. Juicy redcurrants and strawberry flavours are met with a slight herbaceous edge to deliver a delightfully balanced red wine.

If you are popping over these are a must try and represent how you can get a great product without breaking the bank.

Come out of the Shuttle terminal and turn left onto the A16 towards Boulogne, exiting at the first junction you get to (Sortie 41).Turn right at the first roundabout and right again at the next roundabout with the big Channel Tunnel Drill monument, following signs for Coquelles Centre. Drive through the village of Coquelles and after 1km you will see us on your left in the big shopping complex. You need to initially drive past and then double back round the roundabout, entering the car park immediately on your right.

Did you know that not all wine is vegetarian? Let alone vegan! This is because close to the end of the wine making process the wines are filtered through fining agents to sift out any impurities - this process finally gives wine it's clear, clean appearance. Some of these fining agents can be animal based (for example, egg, gelatine and fish oil) - but for our veggie and vegans friends wine makers have discovered a few plant-based, animal friendly alternatives.

New Zealand Sauvignon: An ExplanationDate published: 15/05/13

Everybody loves Sauvignon, and when we think of Sauvignon we naturally think of New Zealand. Many of our customers have been asking us about our New Zealand range, namely why it's getting smaller and more expensive. So we've drafted this little notice to explain ourselves.

In short, the 2012 vintage in Marlborough was down by around 30%, so there is far less wine to go round. The shortage is made worse by increased demand from the Asian markets who are buying huge amounts of New Zealand wine. The result of this is firstly we have less wine to sell and secondly the prices unfortunately, go skywards.

For the moment we still have a good range of New Zealand Sauvignon, including Villa Maria, Giesen, Brancott Estate, Wither Hills and Oyster Bay. Despite the doom and gloom, we stocked up on Giesen, Brancott Estate and Oyster Bay and consequently, have more than enough for summer. Our advice is to stock up now.

BEEF aux CARROTS - An easy stew in 1 hour and 30 minutes

*Attention* - Do not forget to open and decant wine, for this recipe we have chosen Cotes du Rhone, Guigal


- 1kg of Beef

- 1 rasher of Bacon

- 6 Carrots

- 2 Onions

- Tomato puree

- Garlic, Bay leaves and Thyme

- Knob of Butter, or Olive oil

- Salt and Pepper


1) Heat 1tbsp of Olive oil in a pan then add the Onion, Carrot and Garlic, and gently cook for 5 minutes before removing from the pan.

2) Heat a little more Olive oil in the pan, add the Beef (in batches if necessary) and Bacon, then cook until brown.

3) Return the vegetables to the pan and add the Thyme, Bay leaves and Tomato puree then season the mixture with Salt and Pepper.

4) Bring to a gentle simmer and cook covered for 1 hour and 30 minutes until tender, stirring occasionally.

5) Serve with a glass of Cotes du Rhone, Guigal 2009.

    I have been working in Coquelles since 1999, so I could say I am a part of the furniture! I always fancied Champagne - is that something due to my being French?

    Having worked in both the Calais store and the warehouse, I joined the Coquelles crew in 2002. Chardonnay and Viognier are my favourite grapes, especially those from Burgundy and Chile.
